The Scale is to progress what the bench press is to strength:
What everyone always refers to even when not the most valuable indicator.
I’ve literally seen people who’re making great progress quit because the scale wasn’t moving.
As a coach it’s frustrating.
As a human it’s both sad and maddening.
Because while the scale is a tool for progress, not only it’s it not the best, it’s not even that good.
You can literally change the number by taking a dump. Does anyone really think they shit out 2 lbs of actual body fat?
Of course not.
So what are some better indicators?
Well, I’m gonna give an amazing example of a non-scale victory I witnessed last night as just 1.
I have a client that I’ve been working together with for over a year and she’s come a damn long way.
She shows up to train consistently, has changed her relationship with food, and no longer steps on the scale multiple times a day,
When we started she near always wore a hoodie in public, even on warm days.
If it wasn’t a hoodie she wore a baggy t-shirt.
Last night, in a gym full of people, she wore a tank top.
A TANK TOP!
Not only is she not ashamed if her body, she’s growing to love it!
She’s growing comfort and confidence in herself and her capabilities.
Hell, I’m not even sure the last time she stepped on the scale because she uses pictures and measurements to gauge progress now, not that number that used to define how her day would go.
We are many things but we are certainly NOT A NUMBER.
We have value far beyond what the scale says and true progress cannot be measured by such a simple tool.
Non-scale victories will tell you far more about your progress than $15 tool ever could.
